Ice out?

When do you think "ice-out" will be on the lower West River this year? That is, when will flow freely to the Connecticut River? I'm going to predict March 16. Or perhaps you'd like to wager when the last ice shanty will be removed from the Retreat Meadows. Share your predictions and let's have some fun with this perennial milestone!

It's hard to immagine what you might mean about ice out on a river compared to a like like Joe's Pond in Danville. Got an idea how you will determine this?

First, I'm glad a couple of you have actually read the blog recently. Second, I'm glad you've posted comments! Now, to address your questions. Prize? Well, I haven't got one or thought of one. Any ideas out there? I guess I was thinking of the generic prize of satisfaction. What do I mean about ice out on a river? Well, on Joe's Pond I think they determine it by when a clock or something like that falls through the ice. I'm thinking about when the West River flows ice-free to the Connecticut River beneath the bridges in Brattleboro. To be more precise, beginning at the Dummerston covered bridge, when would a boat be able to travel to the bridges in Bratt? There might still be ice along the banks. Maybe that clarifies my intent.

I am partial to March 24. After passing the ice jam and cie coverage this morning and evening, I think we still have some time. I have to say that I am still enjoying winter.

I'm looking at the calendar thinking the 16th might be too early. But I'm not going to change my mind.

Apparently with the icejam, the West (and other rivers around the region) is under watch for potential flooding.

I scoped out the river this a.m. (3.17)and it's flowing freely all the way to the Marina (just before the confluence with the Connecticut) where some ice chunks have blocked up. 4 bobhouses still on the Meadows...
